The Hardest Step

I know how hard it can be to reach out to take the first step when you need support. We are all individual, unique, and diverse therefore the reasons for seeking therapy vary significantly.

Perhaps you're feeling trapped or blocked by the past, confused knowing there must be more to life, but feeling stuck in survival mode with old patterns that keep resurfacing. Maybe you are recently grieving from a bereavement or a loss of some kind, or can’t make sense of relationships, or emotions.  You might feel a general flatness or overwhelmed with feelings of depression and anxiety.

You know changes need to be made and seek a safe, supportive space to work through your processes.  I provide a non-judgemental, inclusive, affirmative and confidential space to explore these difficult thoughts and feelings to gain greater understanding.

I work with you to encourage self-awareness and to understand the relationship you have with yourself and others. We notice patterns of relating, self-beliefs, thought patterns, defence mechanisms, protective factors, and feelings, and where they might originate from. Understanding their effect on the you in the here and now, and what can change to live more comfortably in the present.

Counselling and Psychotherapy are effective in allowing you to make positive changes to your life, so you are able to deal with any overwhelming issues that are causing you emotional pain, unhappiness or stress.

I am what I choose to become"

Counselling versus Psychotherapy

The terms counselling and psychotherapy are often used interchangeably but might be defined and approached differently.  I have found it useful to think that counselling might help to address a current difficulty whereas psychotherapy might address difficulties rooted in the past.

Both approaches focus on the development of a healing, safe, and therapeutic relationship between a therapist and an individual.  They are effective for a wide range of people, both adults and children.  And the focus is on understanding a person's feelings and behaviours, and addressing issues with the goal of improving a person's life

Counselling

Might be useful for specific issues and situations, such as bereavement and loss or work problems, and is likely to take place over a number of weeks or months.

Psychotherapy

Might explore past issues that might be contributing to present day problems, such as abuse, relationship difficulties, depression, and is likely to be open ended and last a number of months or years.
